Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah

Genesis 3: 15

"I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."


Messiah will be born of the "seed" of a woman.

Matthew 1: 20, 21 and Gal. 4: 4

 "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus,"

Gen 12: 3

". . . by you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

Messiah shall be of the lineage of Abraham.

Matthew 1: 1

"The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David,

the son of Abraham."

Genesis 49: 10

"The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples."

Messiah shall be of the

tribe of Judah.

Luke 3: 23 . . . 33

"Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli . . . the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah..."

Micah 5: 2

"But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days."

Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.

Luke 2: 4 - 7

 "And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem . . . to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed . . . And she gave birth to her first-born son . . ."

Isaiah 7: 14

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanu-el."

Messiah would be born

of a virgin.

Luke 1: 26 - 31

 " . . . the angel Gabriel was sent from God to . . . Nazareth, to a virgin . . . and the virgin's name was Mary . . . And the angel said to her, ". . . you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus."

Hosea 11: 1

"When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son."

The flight to Egypt.

Matthew 2: 13, 14

". . . an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt . . . And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt,

Malachi 3: 1

"Behold, I send my messenger to prepare the way before me . . ."

There would be a forerunner to the Messiah.

Luke 7: 26, 27

". . . what then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, 'Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.'"

Psalm 2: 7

"I will tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to me, "You are my son, today I have begotten you."

God Himself shall declare him to be the Son of God.

Matthew 3: 16, 17

"And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

Isaiah 53: 3

"He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not."

He was rejected by his own people, the Jews.

John 1: 11

"He came to his own home, and his own people received him not."

Zechariah 9: 9

"Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on an ass, on a colt the foal of an ass."

Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

Mark 11: 7 - 11

"And they brought the colt to Jesus. . . and he sat upon it. . . And those who went before and those who followed cried out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! . . . And he entered Jerusalem, and went into the temple . . ."

Zechariah 11: 12

"And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver."

He was sold for thirty pieces of silver.

Matthew 26: 14, 15

"Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas . . . said, "What will you give me if I deliver him to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver."

Psalm 41: 9

"Even my bosom friend in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted his heel against me."

Jesus betrayed by a friend.

Luke 22: 47, 48

". . . there came a crowd, and the man called Judas . . . drew near to Jesus to kiss him; but Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Son of man with a kiss?"

Isaiah 53: 7

"He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth."

He was silent to the accusations made against him.

Mark 15: 4, 5

"And Pilate again asked him, 'Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.' But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate wondered."

Isaiah 53: 12

". . . he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."

He was crucified with

law-breakers.

Mark 15: 27

"And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left."

Zechariah 12: 10

". . . when they look on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a first-born."

He shall be "pierced."

John 20: 27

"Then he said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing.'"

Psalm 22: 6, 7

"But I am a worm, and no man; scorned by men, and despised by the people. All who see me mock at me, they make mouths at me, they wag their heads;"

He shall be scorned and mocked.

Luke 23: 35, 36

"And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, 'He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!' The soldiers also mocked him . . ."

Psalm 69: 21

"They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink."

He was given vinegar

and gall to drink.

Matthew 27: 34

"They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink."

Psalm 22: 18

"They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture."

They gambled for his clothes.

Matthew 27: 35

"And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, 'They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.'"

Isaiah 53: 9

"And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth."

He was buried with the rich.

Matthew 27: 57 - 60

". . . there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who . . . went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. . . And when Joseph had taken the body, he . . .laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock:"

Psalm 16: 10

"For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption."

He would be resurrected from the dead.

Mark 16: 6

"And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him."

Psalm 68: 18

"Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the Lord God might dwell among them."

He would ascend back to God.

Mark 16: 19

"So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God."

            These are but a few of the prophetic scriptures from the Old Testament. There are over 300 prophecies about the Messiah which were fulfilled in Jesus.


There are two main points to remember about the many prophecies of the Christ:

1. His coming was not unexpected. It had been foretold since the time of Adam and Eve.

2. There was only one person ever born into the world who fulfilled all the prophecies -- Jesus of Nazareth.
