Archelaus -- dates unknown (Herod Archelaus) |
Archelaus was the son of Herod the Great by a Samaritan
woman named Malthake. He was raised and educated in Rome. When Herod died in 4 BC,
his kingdom was divided between three sons: Antipas, Archelaus, and Philip. He was never
"king" like his father, but is generally referred to as an "ethnarch," a term meaning
"head or ruler over an ethnic group." His rule was over the districts of Judea, Samaria, and
Idumea. He was the ruler of Judea when Mary and Joseph returned to Palestine from Egypt.          In the ninth or tenth year of his reign (6 AD) both his brothers and his subjects filed a complaint of tyranny against him. Rome dismissed him from his position and banished him to Gaul where he is believed to have died.           In the scriptures, Archelaus is mentioned only once: in Matthew 2: 22. |
