Herod Antipas -- dates unknown |
|
          Herod Antipas was the son
of Herod the Great by his wife Malthake, a Samaritan woman. He is frequently mentioned
in the New Testament because of his dealings with John the Baptist and Jesus.
His treatment of John has been the subject of famous paintings, plays, movies, books, and countless
sermons. It is such a compelling story, that if you do not know the story of Antipas and John the
Baptist, you really must click here and read it
now. Later, it was Antipas who questioned Jesus and had him flogged after Pilate had
sent him to him.           By all accounts, Antipas was an extremely ambitious man with an extremely ambitious wife (Herodias). Around 39 AD he appealed to Emporer Caligula to be made king of all Palestine as his father Herod the Great had been. Caligula was partial to Antipas' brother Agrippa, and not only turned Antipas' request for kingship down but exiled him permanently.           Antipas is mentioned in the scriptures in the following places: Matthew 14: 1 - 12, Mark 6: 14 - 29 (see above), Luke 3: 1, Luke 3: 19, and Luke 23: 6 - 15. |
