Philip -- dates unknown (Herod Philip) |
|
Herod Philip was probably the son of Herod the Great by his
wife Cleopatra of Jerusalem. (Some sources say he was the son of Miriamne, a Samaritan
woman of Jewish descent.) Philip did not inherit any part of his father's great wealth. Perhaps that was
why his treacherous wife (Herodias) left him and married his brother Antipas. (See
Mark 6: 17, 18.)           By all accounts, Philip was the best of the sons of Herod. He was a moderate and just ruler who built the city of Caesarea Philippi at the source of the Jordan River. He reigned for 37 years and enjoyed a popular and prosperous tenure.           Philip is mentioned in the scriptures in: Matthew 14: 3, Mark 6: 17 (see above), Luke 3: 1, and Luke 3: 19. |
