Quirinius -- dates unknown (Publius Sulpicius Quirinius) |
|
Quirinius, whose Greek name was Cyrenius, was twice
governor of Syria. His first governorship was at the time of Jesus' birth -- 4 BC
until 1 BC. He was the one who was sent by Rome to make the enrollment for taxation
that caused Mary and Joseph to be in Bethlehem when Jesus was born.           Quirinius is mentioned only once in Luke 2: 2. However, the taxation mentioned in Acts 5: 37 was also during one of the two governorships of Quirinius. |
